Brand New is Retro

Flashback to Greatness: Matthew Williamson

Spring/Summer 1997 (not 1998!) Debut Collection: "Electric Angels"

When Britpop was the best music in any tape player and everyone was wishing that they lived in London reading the NME and hanging out with Kate Moss, Matthew Williamson was one of the Cool Britannia's premier designers. With his use of brilliant color and pattern, his collections under his eponymous label and Pucci established him among the most relevant designers of the 90's and rightfully so...

Essential Art House

The Seventh Seal directed by Ingmar Bergman (1957)

And when the Lamb opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven about the space of half an hour... And the seven angels which had the seven trumpets prepared themselves to sound.

It is one of the most iconic films of all time. Ingrid Bergman always chose films that would stand the test of time, but none quite so beautifully as The Seventh Seal. It's amazing- it still has a freshness and relevance to it, more than 50 years after its release.

Back to School

The School Girl is back. However, sometimes she may be slightly naughty in leather or even from Paris wearing a beret... With the sock trend on the rise, it's no wonder Cher Horowitz made an appearance on the Fall 2010 runway.

I Love Thee, Givenchy

I love Givenchy's ads, as twisted as they may be- this one features transgender/girl-on-girl (WWD). But the politics are beside the point, what I commend Givenchy for doing is found in each advertisement's unique allure. By presenting color and focus, Riccardo Tisci keeps us intrigued time and time again.

Bad Moon Rising

After delivering the gritty "Born Free" you may expect more of MIA's signature style, however her latest is anything but. "XXXO" is definitely her most mainstream to date with its sexual context and pop back-up vocals.

Given that a chopped up "Ghost Rider" by Suicide was used as the primary sample for "Born Free", this more accessible single is a bit of a surprise and a disappointment...Is this the sign of a junior slump?

Art Rock

Talk about a perfect molding of art and rock. Here is a short film for Rodarte featuring an original score by No Age. Could this be the union of a rock/fashion duo, a la Sonic Youth & Marc Jacobs?
